Pioneers fall in season opener

Despite 21 points from Keith Wynne and 13 points from Matt Lobaugh, the Butler County Community College men's basketball team dropped an 88-65 decision to the Geneva College junior varsity team Wednesday.

Ryan Vurns led Geneva with 23 points.

The Pioneers (0-1) will host Franciscan College (Ohio) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Slippery Rock University will play in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference finals after managing a 3-2, sudden-death shootout win over Lock Haven Wednesday afternoon.SRU will face California (Pa.) in the championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday on the Vulcans' home field.Wednesday's victory came when junior defender Nathan Puskar found the back of the net with The Rock's seventh attempt in the shootout, giving his team a decisive 3-2 win.SRU goalkeeper Chris Cook made five saves in the shootout.Also scoring for The Rock on penalty kicks were Shaun Reid and Matt Furlan.
