ST. LOUIS - Mike Martz is out indefinitely as coach of the St. Louis Rams with a bacterial infection of the heart.

Martz was told by a specialist that his condition, which kept him out of two practices last week, had worsened. The 54-year-old has been ill for more than a month and was tested for endocarditis, a bacterial infection of the lining of the heart or a heart valve.

Rams president John Shaw said Monday that Martz will be hospitalized four to 12 days, but wouldn't speculate on the length of his absence. Assistant head coach Joe Vitt will take over as coach.

Two players injured in Green Bay's 52-3 win over New Orleans Sunday will miss the rest of the season.Saints running back Deuce McAllister likely will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament while Packers Running back Najeh Davenport underwent season-ending surgery to repair his broken right ankle.

PHILADELPHIA - Ed Wade was fired as general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies Monday after failing to get them into the playoffs during his eight years on the job.Wade, 49, has two years remaining on his contract and it's unknown whether he'll remain in the organization.The Phillies went 88-74 this season, finishing one game behind NL wild-card winner Houston, and attendance dropped by more than a half-million. They haven't reached the playoffs since 1993, and have won just one championship (1980) in the franchise's 123-year history.

PHILADELPHIA - Bobby Wallace is leaving Temple in the same shape he found it. The Owls have one of the worst programs in college football.In the wake of an 0-6 start this season, he's ready to let someone else try to bring Temple some respectability.After eight losing seasons where he never won more than four games and the program's future was always uncertain, Wallace said Monday he will leave at the end of the year when his contract expires.Wallace said he met with athletic director Bill Bradshaw last week to talk about his future. Wallace said he made the decision now to give Temple a jump start on finding a new coach.

PHOENIX- Amare Stoudemire will undergo diagnostic surgery on his left knee to determine what is causing soreness that has bothered the Phoenix Suns NBA All-Star in recent months.Stoudemire, who signed a five-year, $73 million contract extension a week ago, sat out the final two days of training camp in Tucson because of the injury to the knee's articulate cartilage. If no serious damage is detected, Stoudemire probably will be out three to four weeks, coach Mike D'Antoni told The Associated Press Monday.

SHANGHAI, China - China's Li Ping broke the world records in the women's 116.8-pound clean and jerk and total weight Monday at China's national games.The 17-year-old Li hoisted 286.6 pounds in the clean and jerk, 6.6 pounds more than the world record set by China's Li Xueju in 2002, according to the games' Web site.
