Chad Slater of Butler reported Sept. 9 for duty with Navel Mobile Construction Battalion 23, Erie.The 1988 graduate of Butler High School is a veteran of Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm and served on the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima.He is the son of Bruce Slater of Butler and Barbara Strobel Hagelstein of New Castle, Del.

Russell Roberts entered the Air Force's delayed entry program on Feb. 11 and shipped to basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, on Sept. 27.Roberts, a 2001 graduate of Knoch High, is the son of Russell and Gloria Roberts of Cabot.Army Reserve Pvt.

Curtis Brake has graduated from basic training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.He participated in the split-option training program, which allows high school students to attend and complete the Army National Guard or Reserve basic training during the summer of their junior year. During his senior year, he will attend weekend drills; and after graduation, he will serve as a member of the National Guard or reserve and attend advanced individual training school.He is the son of Patricia and Keith Marath of Portersville and is a student at Lawrence County Vocational Technical High School, New Castle.
