Joe Boros of Treesdale Golf & Country Club fired a second-round 72 and tied for sixth place at the Dick's Sporting Goods Invitational Tour Championship at Indiana Country Club Tuesday.

Boros had a 70 on Monday and finished with a score of 142.

PGA professional John Aubrey Sr. and Ron Milanovich of St. Jude Golf Club both tied for 10th place with a score of 143.

NEW YORK - Injured reliever Carlos Almanzar of the Texas Rangers was suspended for the first 10 days of next season Tuesday for violating baseball's steroids policy.Almanzar is the 10th major league player banned 10 days this year under the sport's new policy, and the second Texas pitcher. Right-hander Agustin Montero was suspended on April 20.

SAN FRANCISCO - Overall No. 1 draft pick Alex Smith was promoted to be the San Francisco 49ers' starting quarterback - ascending to the job after just four games as Tim Rattay's backup.Smith will make his first NFL start on Sunday against Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts at Candlestick Park. He played in two of the 49ers' first four games, mopping up in losses to Philadelphia and Arizona.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Crew chief Todd Berrier was suspended an additional two races Tuesday for violations in Kevin Harvick's car last weekend, bringing his total events missed this season to seven.Berrier was suspended for four races earlier this year when Harvick's fuel tank was found rigged in Las Vegas.

TORONTO - New York Rangers defenseman Dale Purinton was suspended 10 games without pay Monday by the NHL for gouging the eye of Boston's Colton Orr during an exhibition game.
