NEW YORK - Pittsburgh Penguins forward Andre Roy has been suspended by the NHL for the first two games of the regular season for directing repeated inappropriate gestures toward Robin Gomez of the Washington Capitals in an exhibition game.

Roy was suspended for his actions in the Capitals' 3-2 win over Pittsburgh at Hershey, Pa., on Sept. 25.

He will miss games against New Jersey on Oct. 5 and Carolina on Oct. 7. Based on the annual average value of his contract, Roy forfeits $10,204.08 in salary. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

BOSTON - The Boston Red Sox acquired reliever Mike Stanton from the Washington Nationals Thursday for their final, four-game push for the playoffs.The Red Sox sent minor league right-handers Rhys Taylor and Yader Peralta to the Nationals to bring Stanton back for a second stint in Boston. The 38-year-old specialist will be available to pitch this weekend against the New York Yankees, who cut him on June 30.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The New York Giants and Jets have reached agreement on a deal for a new stadium in the Meadowlands.The new facility will be built near Giants Stadium, which is currently home to both teams.Acting Gov. Richard J. Codey announced the deal at a news conference Thursday, saying it would guarantee that both teams remain in New Jersey for the next 99 years.The teams will be paying the estimated $800 million cost of building the stadium and will share in the revenues.

MILWAUKEE - The Cincinnati Reds Thursday extended the contract of manager Jerry Narron through the 2006 season with a mutual option for 2007.Narron began the season as the Reds bench coach and was appointed interim manager when Dave Miley was fired June 21 after the team's 27-43 start.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Charles Warren shot a 30 on the front nine and tied the course record with a 10-under 62 to take the first-round lead in the Chrysler Classic of Greensboro.Warren, who has made only two cuts in his past 15 starts, was two shots clear of K.J. Choi and three ahead of fellow Clemson alum D.J. Trahan.
