SAN ANTONIO - Robert Gamez ended a PGA Tour-record 15½-year stretch between wins Sunday, closing with a 6-under 64 for a three-stroke victory in the Texas Open Sunday.The 37-year-old Gamez had gone 394 events without winning, dating to the 1990 Bay Hill Invitational. Olin Browne (64) finished second.

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nevada - George Archer, the 1969 Masters champion who was one of the best putters in the world during his long professional career, died Sunday after a yearlong battle with Burkitts Lymphoma. He was 65.Archer won 12 times on the PGA Tour and 19 times on the Champions Tour, the last in 2000 in the MasterCard Championship.

LEUVEN, Belgium - Andy Roddick capitalized on his booming serve and a disputed call to defeat Olivier Rochus and give the Americans an unbeatable lead against the Belgian tennis team in the Davis Cup on Sunday.Roddick won 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3 in 41/2 hours to put the U.S. ahead 3-1 in the best-of-five playoff. Belgium was relegated to zonal competition next year. In the final match, James Blake beat Steve Darcis to make the final score 4-1.In the fifth set, Rochus missed the easiest of volleys to give Roddick a 4-2 lead. Officials could not find the impact mark and went with the lineswoman's call. The Belgians disputed but finally relented.The U.S., which has won 31 Davis Cup titles, is out of contention this year. Slovakia and Croatia won their semifinals Sunday to advance to the Dec. 2-4 final.

NEW YORK - New York Yankees star Derek Jeter is the latest athlete to receive a threatening letter warning him to stop dating white women.The letter was mailed to Jeter at Yankee Stadium and called him a "traitor to his race," according to a story in today's editions of the Daily News. It warned him to "stop or he'll be shot or set on fire," said a law enforcement source who the newspaper did not identify. It was not clear whether the source was speaking on condition of anonymity.Jeter, whose father is black and mother is white, has been linked with women of various racial and ethnic backgrounds in New York's gossip columns.In the last three years, 60 similar letters have been sent to professional black athletes and other well-known black men across the nation, including civic and business leaders.
