IN BRIEF
BOSTON - Boston pitcher Matt Clement (13-4) allowed three runs and five hits in 6
innings, walking two and hitting a batter while striking out one, but the Red Sox fell to the Los Angeles Angels 3-0 Thursday
The Butler native had won three straight decisions, but also received no decision in five other starts since July 16.
Clement started with three perfect innings before the Angels' Chone Figgins and Orlando Cabrera hit back-to-back doubles to start the fourth and make it 1-0. Garret Anderson hit a fly ball that Nixon caught against the wall in foul territory, and Cabrera tagged up to take third.
But the runner was called out when the Red Sox appealed that he had left second too early. Angels manager Mike Scioscia argued briefly but retreated to the dugout; during the break, Hatcher was ejected by third base umpire Eric Cooper and became enraged.
Clement hit Vladimir Guererro to lead off the seventh, then Darin Erstad singled him to third. Three straight fielder's choices scored a pair of runs for a 3-0 lead.
PITTSBURGH - Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter will start the Pittsburgh Steelers' opener Sunday against Tennessee despite sitting out the four preseason games and most of training camp following knee surgery.Because Porter missed so much of camp, coach Bill Cowher plans to give Porter some series off so backup James Harrison can play. Porter resumed practicing Monday for the first time since the opening days of camp."He's been looking pretty good the last couple of days," Cowher said. "He's not ready to play a whole game and James will certainly spell him at times."Running back Duce Staley, who also had knee surgery during the first week of camp, was downgraded from questionable to doubtful. Staley hasn't taken part in a full practice since the first day of camp.
Former Seneca Valley swimmer Drew Snyder, along with current SV swimmer Elyse Dobrick and Butler's Molly Evans have been named to the Scholastic All-American Team for their efforts in the pool and in the classroom.
