ARDMORE, Pa. - University of New Mexico junior Charlie Beljan shot a 6-under 64 at Philadelphia Country Club Monay to take the first-round lead in stroke-play qualifying for the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Texas A&M senior Andrew Parr, Kent State senior Ryan Yip, Duke senior Ryan Blaum, Saint Mary's College (Calif.) junior Chandler Cocco and New Mexico senior Jay Choi were tied for second after 68s, all at Philadelphia Country Club.
Mark Strickland of Woodstock, Ga., and Todd Mitchell of Bloomington, Ill., had the only under-par rounds on the more difficult Merion Golf Club course, opening with 69s.
Nathan Smith of Brookville (73) and Sean Knapp of Oakmont (78), both members of St. Jude Golf Club in Chicora, also played the Merion course as did Bennett Smith of Pittsburgh (78), the grandson of Vernon Wise of Butler.
The players will switch courses Tuesday, with the low 64 in the 312-man field advancing to match play on Merion's historic Hugh Wilson-designed East Course. The 36-hole final is Sunday.
Seneca Valley graduate Chris Geddis, 20, broke the 5K record at the 16th annual Raidermaze recently.Geddis completed the course in 15 minutes, 46 seconds. The previous record was 15:52, set by Robert Cessar in 1991. Justin Shepherd, 21, finished second to Geddis and also beat the previous record, running a 15:47.There were 231 5K runners and another 27 runners in the One Mile Fun Run. The youngest runner to finish the 5K was 6 years old while the oldest was 81.Proceeds from the event benefit the Seneca Valley cross country team.
ANAHEIM, Calif. - Right wing Teemu Selanne, the second-leading scorer in Anaheim history, returned to the Mighty Ducks.The 35-year-old free agent signed a one-year, $1 million contract Monday with the team he played for from 1996-01.Selanne, a nine-time All-Star, has averaged 37 goals year in 12 NHL seasons. Since entering the league with Winnipeg in 1992, he has 452 goals. Only Jaromir Jagr (478) has scored more.
