Friendly assistance keys Lambert

BUFFALO TWP - Pure Stocks stand for pure competition - and pure sportsmanship.

Butch Lambert of Mars won his second consecutive feature in the division Friday night at Lernerville Speedway, but with some help from a friend.

That same friend, Greg Beach of Chicora, is now tied with Lambert for the division points lead at Lernerville with two points nights remaining.

"My hat is off to Greg Beach," Lambert said in victory lane Friday. "Last week, my transmission went. He lent me his and I won the race.

"Tonight, he gave me a solenoid, or I wouldn't have been able to race. And here we are again."

Lambert has four feature wins at the Sarver track this season. Only six points separate the top four Pure Stock drivers at Lernerville. Seneca Valley graduate Mike Pegher Jr. is two points behind and Bob Egley, the points leader when the night began, is six behind.

Beach had no problem giving Lambert an assist to victory lane two weeks in a row.

"If I had it to do again, I'd do it again," Beach said. "Butch and I go a long way back. I'd do it for anybody here. If I have a backup part that can get someone else on the track, take it.

"It's all about the competition."

Lambert started from the 12th position and took the lead from Beach, who had been running first since the third lap, with just two laps remaining.

"This is unbelievable. I never expected to win two in a row," Lambert said.

In other features

Brian Swartzlander of Leechburg became the first Modified driver this year to win three features at Lernerville. He started fourth, took the lead from pole-sitter George Hobaugh of Karns City on the sixth lap and cruised to victory.

The win came during the Joe Pitkavish Memorial race and paid $1,500 to win.

The win also came on Swartzlander's 46th birthday - and two days after the No. 83 was severely damaged just seven laps into Wednesday night's Keystone Klassic 100.

"The front end of the car was busted up, the steering, we even had to replace the roof," Swartzlander said. "I didn't think there was any chance we'd make this race.

"I didn't want to put everybody (on his crew) out. I told them we'll just miss a week, it was no big deal. But they insisted on racing."

Seven people combined efforts to fix the car and the work was completed at 12:30 a.m. Friday.

Then Swartzlander's truck blew a tire on Interstate 79 on his way to the track Friday night.

"I was getting disgusted," he admitted. "I mean, it's never easy. But with all the work everybody put in, I wanted to race for them as much as myself."

Four-time defending points champion John Flinner of Zelienople ended a drought by winning his first Late Model feature at Lernerville since May 6.

Flinner started from the seventh spot, grabbed the lead from Ron Davies on the 10th lap and held it from there.

"I've been screwing around with my setup too much this year," Flinner said. "I've been helping so many people, too, and the people I've helped are running really good.

"It's time I did something to help myself. I have to use the month of August to play catch-up."

Flinner's win was the 35th of his career at Lernerville and snapped a third-place tie with Ben Miley on the track's all-time Late Model win list.

Flinner trails Lynn Geisler of Cranberry Township - who finished second Friday - by 10 in the Late Model points race. Flinner is trying to become the first driver ever to win five consecutive points titles at Lernerville in one division.

Jack Sodeman Jr. of Butler started the Sprint feature in the first row and led the race for 18 laps.

On the first turn of the 19th lap, however, Kevin Schaeffer of Kittanning darted down low, then slid in front of Sodeman to deny him his first career Lernerville feature win.

Ed Lynch Jr. passed Sodeman on the final lap, forcing him to settle for third.

Schaeffer's win was his third of the season here. Lynch and Rod George also have three Sprint feature wins at Lernerville this year.

Notes:

There were 93 cars in the pits. … Keith Swartzlander - Brian's brother - got his first career checkered flag at Lernerville in his heat race. … Chanda Reitz, the only woman racing a Modified at Lernerville, finished fourth in the feature. She now has top-five finishes at Lernerville, Sharon Speedway and Tri-City this year, but no feature victories. … Three Sprint cars - Mike Dehner, Cory Good and Bill Kiley - flipped during an accident on Turn 2 during a heat race. All three cars had to be towed from the track, but the drivers were unhurt. … The World of Outlaws Late Models return to Lernerville next Friday with $20,000 going to the winner.
