Zambia to send terror suspect to U.K.
LUSAKA, Zambia - A terror suspect wanted for questioning about the July 7 bombings that killed 56 people in London will be deported to Britain, President Levy Mwanawasa said today.
The president said that British and American investigators have interrogated Haroon Rashid Aswat in Zambia and have agreed he should be deported to Britain. No date for the deportation was given.
"I would like to confirm that we have arrested Aswat, who has been held on violating the immigration laws of Zambia. Once we were holding him, we realized he was an alleged terrorist. It was agreed between the American and British governments that he should be deported to the United Kingdom," Mwanawasa told a news conference.
Zambian authorities have said they've been questioning Aswat, 31, about 20 phone calls he allegedly made to some of the July 7 bombers on his South African cell phone.
Mwanawasa said that "it was alleged that he was involved in terror activities."
A Zambian official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the press, said last week that Aswat had told investigators he used to be a bodyguard for al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden.
Bin Laden's terror organization claimed responsibility for the Sept. 11 attacks in New York and Washington. British police have said the July 7 attacks bore al-Qaida's hallmarks.
