Maddux’s milestone

Cubs pitcher notches 3,000th strikeout

Greg Maddux would have gladly traded his 3,000th strikeout for a Cubs’ victory. He never really looks for strikeouts anyway.

Maddux became the 13th pitcher in major league history to reach the milestone when he struck out San Francisco’s Omar Vizquel to end the third inning Tuesday night, before the Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 3-2 on Jason Ellison’s RBI single in the 11th.

“It would have been nice to win. And if (the milestone) happened great and if it didn’t and we won, I would much rather have gotten no strikeouts and won. Trust me,” Maddux said.

Maddux struck out Vizquel on a 2-2 pitch on the inside corner, and the crowd of 39,002 at Wrigley Field — one that had waited out a 2-hour, 43-minute rain delay before the start — went wild.

Cubs catcher Michael Barrett put the ball in Maddux’s glove as he crossed the third-base line, and several of Maddux’s teammates stopped to hug him and shake his hand. Seconds later Maddux emerged from the dugout for a curtain call and doffed his cap.

At Atlanta, Andruw Jones drew a bases-loaded walk from Luis Ayala in the 10th, capping a comeback that propelled the Braves in first place in the NL East.

At Houston, Mike Lamb led off the bottom of the ninth with a homer off Ryan Madson (4-4) and Roy Oswalt (14-8) threw a complete game in the win.

At Milwaukee, Geoff Jenkins homered to open a six-run seventh, and Lyle Overbay also connected in the Brewers’ come-from-behind victory.

At Denver, Jeff Francis (9-7) pitched into the seventh and Dustan Mohr homered for Colorado.

At San Siego, Albert Pujols homered and John Gall had a hit and scored twice in his major league debut for St. Louis.

At Los Angeles, Cesar Izturis hit a go-ahead single in the seventh inning and the Dodgers got homers from Jeff Kent and Olmedo Saenz.

Sammy Sosa hit his 586th home run to tie Frank Robinson for fifth place on the career list, and Baltimore ended a six-game skid.

At New York, Randy Johnson (11-6) took a no-hit bid into the sixth, pitched two-hit ball for eight innings and struck out 11.

At Toronto, Gustavo Chacin (10-5) pitched eight sharp innings and Shea Hillenbrand homered and had four RBIs for the Blue Jays (50-49). Toronto third baseman Corey Koskie went 1-for-4 with a walk in his first game since breaking his thumb on May 19.

At Kansas City, Mo., Mark Teahen hit a three-run double and came all the way around on a throwing error in a six-run sixth inning to help the Royals defeat Chicago for the first time this season.

At Seattle, Dmitri Young hit a go-ahead, three-run homer in the eighth and tied his career high with five RBIs.

At Oakland, Calif., Grady Sizemore homered and Jake Westbrook (8-12) pitched well to helping Cleveland to the win.
