Saxonburg wins 1st-round contest
Jim Bacon was a stranger.
At a meeting before the Region 7 American Legion baseball tournament at State College, the Saxonburg coach was an unknown.
"I went to the meeting and everyone knew everyone else except for me," Bacon said.
The Saxonburg Legion team didn't even exist last season. People know it exists now after a 10-3 win over DuBois in the first round of the tournament Monday.
"I was real pleased," Bacon said. "Saxonburg hasn't ever been to the Region 7 tournament and we didn't know what to expect."
Saxonburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning ,thanks to a big error and a pair of walks.
That allowed Saxonburg starting pitch John Lefevre to relax.
He did, giving up just one run in a solid seven innings of work.
"We capitalized on a couple of things (in the second inning)," Bacon said. "John had a real good say today on both sides, pitching and hitting."
Lefevre also had three hits and scored two runs for Saxonburg (21-2), which beat a team in DuBois long on experience.
"They had seven or eight 19-year-olds on the team," Bacon said.
The road gets a little bumpier today when Saxonburg must face off against host and favorite State College under the lights. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
State College has four Division I-bound players on the roster and is a lofty 33-4 this season.
"We're up against some top competition," Bacon said. "Hopefully the nerves will be done. We're facing a real powerhouse."
