IN BRIEF

MONTREAL - Michael Phelps recovered from a stunning collapse in his first event of the World Swimming Championships - he didn't even advance past the preliminaries - to lead off a dominating U.S. victory in the 400-meter freestyle relay Sunday night.

Phelps, Neil Walker, Nate Dusing and Jason Lezak set a meet record with a time of 3 minutes, 13.77 seconds, beating runner-up Canada by nearly three seconds. Australia took the bronze.

The relay victory put Phelps in a much better frame of mind after his performance in the 400 free. He entered the event hoping to challenge Australian star Grant Hackett and get started on matching that six-gold, eight-medal haul from the Athens Olympics, but faded badly after his last flip to wind up next-to-last in his heat and 18th overall.

WEST ALLIS, Wis. - Sam Hornish Jr. raced like he was driving a stock car, putting his teammate into the wall and touching tires with at least two other drivers before wrapping up a hard-earned victory in the A.J. Foyt 225.Hornish had to pass Dario Franchitti twice in the waning laps at the Milwaukee Mile before pulling away for his second win of the season and extending his own Indy Racing League career victory record to 14.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The United States won the CONCACAF Gold Cup for the third time, beating Panama 3-1 on penalty kicks following a scoreless tie in Sunday's final.Santino Quaranta, Landon Donovan and Brad Davis converted for the Americans, while goalkeeper Kasey Keller stopped the opening shot from Luis Tejada and allowed just one penalty, to Felipe Baloy.
