Lambert takes Pure Stock feature
BUFFALO TWP - It took a bit longer than Butch Lambert would have liked, but you'll never hear him complaining about a win.
The Mars resident took the checkered flag in the Pure Stock feature race Friday night at Lernerville Speedway.
He paced the field from start to finish, but six caution flags, including four stops between laps seven and eight, slowed the 15-lap race.
"We definitely stayed out there long enough," Lambert said. "It was tough to keep my concentration."
It is Lambert's 10th career win at the Sarver track and his second this season. The first came on May 6.
He entered Friday's action in eighth place in the points standings with 137.
Lambert changed his strategy after the first two caution flags, eventually taking the high road to keep his lead.
"Coming out of the first two restarts, I stayed low, and it seemed to work," he said. "But I wanted to get back on top because I didn't want to give that groove up."
Though no other driver held the lead during the race, Lambert wasn't confident of a victory until the very end.
"It's never easy," he said. "It's always in the back of your mind who is behind you. There's a lot of talent in this division."
In the Bicknell Racing Products Modified feature, Brian Swartzlander took the lead from Jim Weller Jr. on lap No. 28 and held on to become the first repeat winner in the division at Lernerville in 2005.
Though the 30-lap event didn't count toward the point standings, the payout was larger at $1,200.
"I didn't think I had a chance at the end," said Swartzlander. "But luck was on our side. Jim (Weller) raced a great race."
Though he didn't start in the top five, Swartzlander gradually worked his way through the field. He was fourth after three laps, took third by the eighth lap and was in second place by lap No. 13.
Slippery Rock's Dave Murdick had a strong showing and placed third.
Cranberry Township's Lynn Geisler, two weeks removed from earning his 101st Late Model victory at Lernerville, picked up win No. 102.
He outlasted last week's winner, Nick Jones, in a race that saw nine caution flags in its 20 laps.
Geisler grabbed the lead during the eighth lap and never gave it up.
"Nick has been really on his game this year," Geisler said. "If you can outrun him, then you know you've done well."
Zelienople's John Flinner, who led the race in laps three through seven, finished fourth. Chuck Kennedy of Mars was sixth.
Gaining his first-ever win at Lernerville was Sprint driver Jody Keegan, who picked up his initial career victory at Franklin's Tri-City Speedway last weekend.
With two laps to go, Keegan had a decent lead on Ed Lynch Jr. before a caution flag brought the field closer together. But Lynch was unable to take over first place following the green flag.
