Geisler extends win streak
BUFFALO TWP - The streak continues.
Lynn Geisler of Cranberry Township grabbed the lead from Mike Norris on the 16th lap and outlasted Bob Wearing Jr. over the final five laps to win the Late Model feature Friday night at Lernerville Speedway.
The win marked Geisler's first at the Sarver track this year, his 101st win here overall and the 23rd consecutive year in which he's taken a checkered flag in a Lernerville Late Model feature.
"This one feels good to get," Geisler said. "But it didn't come easy - they never come easy here."
Geisler started from the 10th spot, but took second from Wearing on the 11th lap. He came together with Wearing on the bottom of Turn 1 on the 12th lap, causing the No. 1W to bobble and temporarily drop to fifth.
"Maybe he didn't see me there, but I thought he did," Wearing said. "He dropped down into me pretty good."
Norris began the race in the second row, took the lead on the third lap and held it until the 15th. Geisler jumped in front of him on the back straightaway as those two cars made contact.
Norris then spun on Turn 4 and Nick Jones, with nowhere to go and no time to react, plowed into him. Jones had gone from 22nd to third, but had to be towed to the pits. Norris pitted as well.
"I lost my steering and that's why my car turned," Norris said. "But I thought he (Geisler) cut me a little close on that pass. He didn't have enough room."
Geisler had no problem with either move on Wearing and Norris.
"I thought they were good moves, actually," he said. "I didn't see Bobby down there and I slipped in front on the back (straightaway)
"They were close. This was a close race with a lot of movement out there. Guys are gonna get upset when it doesn't go their way. I've been there. But it's just good, hard racing."
Norris was looking for his first-ever feature win at Lernerville. Wearing wound up second, his best finish of the season.
"The car's been there all year," Norris said of his set-up. "All we needed was a chance to start up front and we got it tonight. I thought it was gonna happen for us."
Dave Murdick of Slippery Rock, last year's Modified points champion, started up front in Friday's feature and led from start to finish.
He grabbed his first feature checkered flag of the season anywhere - but not without an anxious moment.
Ed Lynch Jr., driving Kevin Bolland's No. 777 Modified, started from the eighth spot and maneuvered his way to second before a seventh-lap restart.
Murdick and Lynch began that restart side by side, but Murdick's No. 61 slid into Lynch and knocked him against the wall, causing Lynch to fall to sixth.
A caution came out a lap later as Gary Risch Jr. and Justin Broerman collided. During the caution, Lynch drove up to Murdick and rammed his car.
"He put me into the wall and I didn't appreciate it," Lynch said.
"I was running the bottom on that restart and the track had gotten slippery," Murdick said. "My car slid down and … yeah, I hit him. But I wasn't sure where he was at the time and it certainly wasn't intentional.
"He (Lynch) intentionally hit me during a caution. That should have been a black flag … automatic."
While Murdick pulled away in the final 12 laps to win the race going away, Lynch faded to eighth. Lynch was racing a Modified for the first time since 1986. He does own a Modified feature win at Lernerville during his career.
Bolland called Lynch at 3:30 p.m. Friday and asked him to race his No. 777. Bolland suffered a rib injury during an accident last week at Sharon Speedway.
"The right rear of the car got damaged when I hit the wall. It wasn't the same after that," Lynch said.
Murdick lost his brakes with seven laps to go, "but the car smoothed out. When you start up front, you should do well and we did."
In other races at Lernerville, Kevin Schaeffer of Kittanning and Mike Pegher Jr. of Wexford led from wire to wire to win the Sprint and Pure Stock features, respectively.
Schaeffer started from the fifth spot, but grabbed the lead on the first lap and never gave it up. Lynch settled for second after starting eighth.
"I knew Eddie was coming up behind me, so I just got through lap traffic as quickly as I could," Schaeffer said.
Schaeffer, Lynch and Rod George all have two Sprint feature wins at Lernerville this season.
Pegher began the Pure Stock feature on the pole and held off Scott Bochek to become the first driver to win two Pure Stock features at Lernerville this year.
Notes:
There were 102 cars in the pits. … Ralph Spithaler of Evans City drove Pete Simpson's No. 57 Modified to a heat race win and had the pole for the feature before finishing ninth. Like Bolland, Simpson is sidelined with a rib injury. Lynch also won his heat race while driving for Bolland. … Fab Four racing continues next Friday at Lernerville, including the Sonia Bullis Memorial Sprint Race. Bullis was Chad Hill's car owner last season and died of cancer during the off-season.
