It's all sports all the time

KC frosh earns 4 letters in 1 year

You won't find Allyson Kepple taking a few months off, reflecting on her accomplishments in one or two sports.

The moment one sports season concludes she's looking for the next challenge.

It's that attitude that helped the Chicora native letter in four sports as a freshman at Karns City High School in 2004-05.

From her soccer exploits last fall to the basketball court in the winter to the double duty she pulled off last spring by participating in both track and softball, Kepple contributed to all four teams without slowing down.

"I started playing soccer and T-ball when I was 5 years old," said Kepple. "And I picked up basketball in fifth grade."

When it comes to track and field, Kepple proved to be a late-bloomer.

"This was my first year of running track," she said. "I wasn't planning on going out for it, but I really liked it."

Allyson's uncle, Ed Kepple, is the head coach of the Gremlins girls track and field team.

"My wife Lisa is the (physical education) instructor at the high school," Ed Kepple said. "And she urged Allyson to give track a shot."

Allyson qualified for the District 9 Class AA Track and Field Championships in the 400-meter run and the 3,200 and 1,600 relays.

"She was able to post some good individual times in the 400 and 800 runs this year," said Ed Kepple. "She really had a solid freshman season."

Allyson started at shortstop for KC's softball team, at shooting guard for the basketball team and played mostly center midfield for the soccer team. All three squads made the District 9 playoffs.

"I love all four sports," said Allyson. "I can't pick one over the others, even though I've only run track for one season."

"It's not just that she participates in all those sports," said Gremlins girls basketball coach Chris Bellis. "But she's also dedicated to them as well."

The spring season got to be a bit hectic, going back and forth between softball and track for the Gremlins while also playing for the Butler Cubs 15-under girls basketball team.

"I missed a few practices for track and softball," said Allyson. "But I never actually missed a softball game or a track meet."

"I'm pretty amazed at how she balanced softball and track," said Ed Kepple. "It's very hard for kids to handle two sports at once, let alone a freshman."

Think Allyson is using the summer months to finally take that well-deserved break?

Think again.

Her season with the Butler Cubs will not finish until July 9 and she also plays in a summer soccer league.

"I'm all for her being involved in all those things as long as she can handle it," said Bellis. "And she has proven she can because she's successful in every sport. Plus, she gets the job done in the classroom, too."

Chances seem slim that Allyson would give up one of her activities unless her love of a particular sport begins to fade.

Don't bet on that happening any time soon.

"I'm planning on playing all four sports my sophomore year," she said.
