WEST ALLIS, Wis. - Paul Tracy made an outside pass of pole-winner Jimmy Vasser on the 19th of 221 laps and went on to win the Road Runner 225 Champ Car World Series event, holding off tenacious second-year driver A.J. Allmendinger in the waning laps at the Milwaukee Mile on Saturday.
Tracy started fifth in the 17-car field but was second by the end of the first lap. He stayed close to Vasser, who started from the pole for the first time in four years, and finally made his move on a restart following the first of three caution flags in the race.
The Canadian-born Tracy, who lives in Las Vegas, shot to the outside of Vasser on the wide, flat mile oval. Vasser fought hard to hold Tracy off and the two drove side by side for more than half a lap before Tracy finally pulled ahead coming off the fourth turn.
DOVER, Del. - Martin Truex Jr. bided his time until the handling on Kevin Harvick's car went away, then passed him for the lead with 70 laps to go and eventually drove away to an easy victory in the NASCAR Busch series race Saturday at Dover International Speedway.It was the second consecutive victory on The Monster Mile for the series champion, his third this year and ninth overall in Busch competition. After passing Harvick, Truex was out of the lead for only four more laps of the MBNA 200.
SALT LAKE CITY - Landon Donovan scored in the sixth and 62nd minutes and goalkeeper Kasey Keller came up with three huge saves to help the United States beat Costa Rica 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier Saturday night.Brian McBride added his 27th international goal in the 87th minute, scoring off the rebound of a shot by Clint Dempsey, who had taken a feed from Donovan.
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - A 41-year-old man was charged Sunday with calling in a fake bomb threat at The Palace two hours before Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals.David Mathew-Anthony Demeres was charged with two felonies - making a false report of terrorism and making a false report of a bomb threat, police said. He was arraigned Sunday and released on $15,000 cash bond.Demeres is from Lapeer, about 25 miles from Auburn Hills. There was no telephone listing for him in the area.The threat was made before Saturday night's game between the Detroit Pistons and Miami Heat. The caller said a bomb would go off if the game were played. Police said security measures implemented after similar cases this season helped identify the suspect.
MIAMI - Washington Redskins free safety Sean Taylor was released on $16,500 bond after he was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a firearm.Taylor, 22, turned himself in to Miami-Dade County police Saturday and was released later that night, Miami-Dade corrections spokeswoman Janelle Hall said Sunday. Since Taylor was set free, the Miami-Dade County clerk's office will set an arraignment date later.Taylor was accompanied by defense attorney Fred Moldovan when he surrendered on charges of aggravated assault with a firearm and simple battery, police said.According to a police statement, Taylor pointed a gun at an unidentified person Wednesday during a dispute over two all-terrain vehicles he claimed were stolen. Taylor left the scene but returned about 10 minutes later and punched one person.
