Cheer:
A thumbs-up is in order to schools such as Evans City Elementary that provide an end-of-the-year fun day for students.
A story on Page 2 of Wednesday's Butler Eagle recounted how that school allowed its students to test silly skills on "Survivor" day. It was a non-competitive day in which all students could have fun - and maybe even learn something about teamwork in the process.
Some of the games played were titled "Chocolate River," "Pizza Delivery," "Soak it Up," "Three Blind Mice," "Survivor Scramble" and "Puzzle Stumper."
"It's great because no one wins or loses and there are no points," said Sue Frankenstein, a teacher at the school. "Everyone gets a turn, and it's just to have fun."
The general "Survivor" theme for the day provided a contemporary touch to the activities, considering the current popularity of TV's "Survivor" series.
The end of the school year is a time of pressure for students as they prepare for tests and other requirements. The Evans City "Survivor" day provided students and teachers a respite from their regular routines and, in the students' case, perhaps introduced them to some new skills that they might not have previously encountered.
Education is possible even in a recreational environment.
