IN BRIEF
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Carolina Panthers traded Todd Sauerbrun to the Denver Broncos Thursday, ridding themselves of their talented but troubled punter.
Denver sent punter Jason Baker and its seventh-round draft choice in 2006 to Carolina in exchange for Sauerbrun, a two-time Pro Bowl selection.
Considered by many to be the best punter in the NFL, Sauerbrun has created numerous headaches both on and off the field for the Panthers. Most recently, he was one of three players named in a CBS report as having obtained illegal steroid prescriptions from a South Carolina doctor under federal investigation.
He also was charged with drunken driving last season, not long after he refused to fill in for injured kicker John Kasay unless the Panthers refunded money they had fined him for being overweight.
DENVER - Former world champion sprinter Michelle Collins accepted a four-year suspension for a doping violation, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said Thursday.Collins, who forfeits her titles in the 200 meters from the 2003 indoor world and U.S. championships, originally was suspended for eight years but appealed. USADA reduced the sanction to four years, and Collins agreed to drop her appeal.
FORT WORTH, Texas - Patrick Sheehan just missed another record in the Colonial Thursday, bogeying the final hole for an 8-under 62 in an opening round that also included a double bogey and 11 birdies.Trying to become the fourth player in three years to shoot a 61 at Colonial, Sheehan pulled his drive at the 433-yard 18th hole into the trees. His approach landed just behind the green, and he stubbed his first chip shot.Instead of a Colonial record, Sheehan settled for his best PGA Tour round and also matched the low first round on tour this year.Sheehan had a two-stroke lead over Brian Bateman and D.J. Trahan.
