Turner to focus on Modified in '06
BUFFALO TWP - What checkered flages he's won so far, Mike Turner would like to throw them back.
"I've won four or five B-Mains in my career," he said. "But you don't want to find yourself running in those races."
B-Mains are for drivers who don't qualify for the feature through heat race placement - and Turner has wound up in such races more times than he cares to think about.
The Butler driver, in his seventh season of driving his No. 6 Pure Stock at Lernerville Speedway, has never won a feature or even a heat race at any track.
But while he's having his best season to date - sitting fourth in points, only 13 off the lead - this is his last season in the Pure Stock division.
Turner and his father, DeWayne Turner, bought a Modified from Pete Simpson last year and raced the No. 96 car for half of the 2004 campaign.
This year, Turner is competing in both divisions at Lernerville weekly. He is 14th in Modified points with 44.
"The two divisions are as different as night and day," Turner said. "But we've been wanting to get into a Modified for years.
"That's where all of our experience and knowledge is at."
DeWayne Turner has worked with veteran Modified drivers Carl and Dave Murdick for 25 years. He knows the division and how to set up the car.
When it comes to Pure Stocks, the father-son tandem have just been winging it.
"We love to race and this is what we could afford," the elder Turner said of the Pure Stock division.
They build most of their own parts or buy used parts. The self-financed race team has no other choice.
Turner's current No. 6 car is in its third season.
"There aren't any new parts on this car," Turner said. "Not one. Yet we've been competitive."
Turner has finished second in Pure Stock features twice. He owns one third-place finish in his career and began this season with fourth, fifth and sixth-place finishes.
But as far as competing for a high finish in points? Turner has no such ideas.
"This car is for sale right now," he said. "If the right money comes along, it's gone."
In the meantime, he does have one goal in mind for the No. 6.
"I'd love to get to victory lane in it - just once," he said. "I'd love for that to happen."
"I don't rule that out," his father said. "Mike drives well enough. If he starts up front and everything breaks his way, he can get there."
But whether he does or doesn't, he's a full-time Modified driver come next season.
The Turners plan to put a better engine program in the No. 96 during the next off-season.
"This year's all about seat time and getting a feel for the car," the elder Turner said.
But the added laps on the track are helping Turner in both divisions.
"I only got 20 to 25 laps in on this (Modified) car last year," he said. "You figure this year, two heat races and two features, I'm getting 50 to 60 laps in every Friday night.
"The more times you go around the race track, the better you're going to get at it. It doesn't matter what car you're driving."
With a new motor, a few new parts and help from the Murdick family, one might think the Turners are setting some new goals for 2006.
Think again.
"Just keep it together and have fun," Turner said. "We do this because we enjoy it."
