Seneca Valley students win Envirothon
A team of students from Seneca Valley High School placed first at this year's Butler County Envirothon. Students from Karns City placed second and third.
The Conservation District's Envirothon was held on May 5 at Jennings Environmental Education Center. Fifteen junior and senior high school teams from Seneca Valley, Karns City and Moniteau participated in the event. A total of 85 students attended.
The Envirothon is designed to give students an opportunity to acquire and demonstrate their knowledge of environmental resources and interactive relationships between resources and human activities. The students were challenged in the areas of forestry, aquatics, soils, wildlife and managing cultural landscapes by a team of environmental experts. Tests were conducted by personnel from the Bureau of Forestry, the state Game Commission, the state Fish and Boat Commission, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Butler County Recycling Department and the Butler County Conservation District.
The Seneca Valley team is under the direction of science teacher Rebecca Finch. The team will now represent Butler County in the annual state Envirothon held at Bloomsburg University and Montour Preserve in Columbia and Montour counties on May 23 and 24.
The Sunnyview Community Gardens are now being assigned. There are a limited amount of gardens this year. If you are interested in planting and maintaining a garden, please call the Conservation District office at 724-284-5270.
