IN BRIEF

HARRISBURG - Last year was the safest for Pennsylvania hunters in the more than 90 years that records have been kept, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

There were 56 hunting-related shooting incidents, including four fatalities, in 2004 - a rate of just 5.56 incidents per 100,000 participants. A hunting-related shooting incident is any in which a person is hurt by a firearm or bow and arrow discharged by a hunter or trapper.

But game officials said there was a disturbing fact tucked away in the otherwise positive statistics - one out of four incidents involved self-inflicted injuries, including one of the fatalities.

Deer hunting accounted for the largest number of incidents, 23, including all four fatalities. Wild turkey and small-game hunting also produced incidents in the double digits, 14 and 13, respectively.
