WASHINGTON - The Washington Wizards suspended forward Kwame Brown for the remainder of the playoffs.

The announcement came after Brown, coach Eddie Jordan and president of basketball operations Ernie Grunfeld met for about 10 minutes before the team's practice.

The Wizards are tied with the Chicago Bulls 2-2 in their Eastern Conference first-round series. Game 5 is Wednesday in Chicago.

DEERFIELD, Ill. - Ben Gordon became the first rookie to win the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year Award.Gordon averaged 15.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists in just over 24 minutes this season for Chicago. He came off the bench in 79 of 82 games and helped the Bulls make their first playoff appearance since 1998, when Michael Jordan led them to their sixth title.Gordon received 88 of 125 first-place votes and 513 points from a panel of media members. Boston guard Ricky Davis was second with 257 points, and Denver guard Earl Boykins was third with 155.

PONTIAC, Mich. - A fan charged with throwing a chair during a fight among players and fans at an NBA game - one of the worst brawls in U.S. sports history - was sentenced to two years of probation.Bryant Jackson was the only one of the 13 players and fans charged with a felony in the Nov. 19 melee during the Indiana Pacers-Detroit Pistons game.Jackson pleaded no contest in March to one count of felony assault and one count of misdemeanor assault and battery. He was accused of heaving a chair over his head, hitting several people, and of throwing a drink at the Pacers as they left the court.

INNSBRUCK, Austria - Mark Parrish had two goals and the United States rallied to beat Latvia 3-1, clinching a second-round berth at the world hockey championships.Doug Weight also scored for the Americans (2-0), who will play Canada for first place in their group finale Thursday. Earlier, the two-time defending champion Canadians routed winless Slovenia 8-0 for their second straight win, and Switzerland beat Kazakhstan 2-1 in Vienna.The Czech Republic also secured a berth in the next round with a 2-0 victory over Germany in Vienna, but Jaromir Jagr left the game in the second period after apparently breaking the little finger on his left hand.
