Pirates investigating arrests of minor league pitchers

PITTSBURGH - The Pittsburgh Pirates are investigating the arrest of Triple-A Indianapolis pitchers Cory Stewart and Jeff Miller following a weekend incident during which police used a stun gun on Stewart.

According to a police report, Stewart was shocked twice with the stun gun by Marion County (Ind.) Sheriff's Department deputies who responded to a reported disturbance early Saturday morning at an apartment complex where the two players live.

Stewart, 25, was charged with disorderly conduct, resisting law enforcement and public intoxication. Miller, his roommate, was charged with public intoxication, according to the report.

The Indianapolis Star reported Sunday that the disturbance began after the 6-foot-3, 235-pound Miller, 25, returned to the complex and could not find his apartment key. He borrowed a neighbor's table to try to reach the balcony of his apartment but the table broke, and an argument with the neighbor followed.

After deputies were called, according to the police report, they used the stun gun to subdue the 6-foot-4, 215-pound Stewart after he struggled with them.

Pirates general manager Dave Littlefield said the players will remain with Indianapolis for now.

"I have not gotten all the facts together and until we do, we have no report on our position," Littlefield said Sunday. "Until everything gets weeded out, they will remain with the club. ... Certainly, we do not condone any type of behavior that warrants being arrested or having issues with the police."

The Indians issued a similar statement quoting general manager Cal Burleson as saying that the team does not approve of "irresponsible behavior" on the part of any players, but declining further comment until the case is resolved by the legal system.

The Pirates obtained Stewart with left-hander Oliver Perez and 2004 NL rookie of the year Jason Bay in a 2003 trade with San Diego, but Stewart is the only one of the three who has yet to play in the majors.

Stewart is 1-2 with a 3.04 ERA in four starts this season. Miller, a 15th-round pick by Pittsburgh in the June 2001 draft, is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 10 games after pitching a scoreless inning Sunday in a 6-3 loss to Louisville.

Both are considered major league prospects by the Pirates and are on their 40-man organizational roster.

This is the second setback in less than a month for the Indians, who became the Pirates' top farm club this season.

Last month, Indians pitcher Brian Mallette drew a 30-game penalty as a two-time offender of baseball's drug policy, and Indians outfielder Jon Nunnally was given a 15-game suspension as a first offender.
