NEW YORK - Managers Lou Piniella and Terry Francona were among six members of the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Devil Rays suspended

Friday for their roles in two bench-clearing scuffles last weekend.

Piniella and Francona were suspended three games apiece and fined an undisclosed amount for their teams' actions during Boston's victory last Sunday. The game featured six ejections, two beanballs and some high-and-tight pitching.

Boston pitcher Bronson Arroyo was given the harshest penalty, a six-game suspension. Tampa Bay pitchers Dewon Brazelton and Lance Carter were each suspended five games, and Boston outfielder Trot Nixon was suspended for two games. All four players were also fined undisclosed amounts.

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz and Tampa Bay outfielder Chris Singleton were each fined for their roles in the fracas. They will both appeal the fines. All four suspended players will also appeal.

PHILADELPHIA - All-Pro wide receiver Terrell Owens skipped the Philadelphia Eagles' first mandatory minicamp practice Friday, presumably because he wants a new contract.Owens said several times this month he wants to renegotiate the seven-year deal he signed last March. The Eagles have refused to redo the contract worth nearly $49 million.Owens helped the Eagles reach the Super Bowl in his first season in Philadelphia after eight years with the San Francisco 49ers.

FOXBORO, Mass. - Doug Flutie signed a one-year deal Frudat to return to the New England Patriots.Flutie played for the Patriots for parts of three seasons in the late 1980s before going to the Canadian Football League.

NEW YORK - Boston forward Antoine Walker was suspended Friday for one game by the NBA for grabbing a referee during an angry confrontation with Indiana's Jermaine O'Neal.O'Neal was fined $10,000 for his role in the altercation.Walker was ejected following his second technical Thursday night after a hard foul on O'Neal with just over four minutes to go. During the confrontation, Walker grabbed referee Tom Washington by the arm in an attempt to move him out of the way. O'Neal shoved Walker in the chest and grabbed his jersey, but no punches were thrown.Walker will miss Game 4 Saturday in Indianapolis and will be reinstated for Game 5 in Boston on Tuesday.

AVONDALE, La. - India's Arjun Atwal overcame gusting winds Friday to shoot a 4-under 68 and take a one-stroke lead over J.J. Henry after two rounds of the Zurich Classic.Atwal, looking for his first PGA Tour victory, had six birdies and two bogeys in gusts of up to 25 mph and moved to 11-under 133. Henry had a second straight 67 to get to 10 under, and Chris DiMarco, playing in his first event since losing the Masters in a playoff, had a 71 and was tied with Tim Clark (69) at 8 under.
