Had 'em all the way
BUFFALO TWP - There was some question about who earned the pole position for Friday night's World of Outlaws Late Model feature at Lernerville Speedway.
There was no question about who earned the feature's checkered flag.
Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark., led the rain-shortened feature from start to finish and never was seriously challenged during the 25-lap race. Scheduled for 50 laps, a steady rain forced the abbreviated version after Robbie Blair's spin-out on Turn 1 caused the caution flag to come out.
A slight sprinkle then became heavy enough to make the track too slick for racing.
"I would have loved to have finished the race," runner-up Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., said. "But with the track conditions, there was no way they could do it.
"There would have been a bunch of banged-up race cars had we continued."
While Moyer never lost the front spot, many wondered if he should have gotten it at all. During the 6-lap fast dash - in which the six heat race winners ran against each other to determine the feature's pole-sitter - it appeared Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., edged Moyer at the finish line.
The scorers awarded the victory to Moyer, however, causing flagman Spanky Hall and numerous fans to turn their heads in the booth's direction.
The ruling stood. And Moyer stayed in front. The driver of the No. 21 car took home the $10,000 winner's purse and became the first driver on the Outlaws Late Model circuit to win a second feature this season.
"I'm hoping I have more than two wins once this 50-plus race series is over," Moyer said. "Everything's working well right now, but it's all about the big picture."
Moyer began the night as the series' points leader. During its recent two-week break, he won a $10,000 feature in Columbus, Miss.
"Any night we have a good car, we're gonna go for it," he said. "I'm sure there'll be other nights where we have to take what we can get."
Lanigan started from the second row and wound up second. While Moyer had the lead throughout, Lanigan, 17-year-old Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., Steve Francis and defending points champion Scott Bloomquist continually jockeyed for second through fifth.
"Billy was going pretty good tonight," Lanigan said. "When you're running for points, finishing second is a pretty big deal. I'll take it."
Lanigan began the night in third place in the points race. Clint Smith, who finished 12th, held the second spot.
Richards finished third in Friday's feature and Francis, who started from the 18th spot, wound up fourth.
David Scott of Garland was the top finisher among area drivers, taking 10th.
Scott spun out on the first lap of his heat race and had to tail the field. He rallied to finish third in the 10-lap race, the last feature-qualifying position in the heats.
The feature had five re-starts, one because of a red light. Shane Clanton of Locust Grove, Ga., suffered a shoulder injury when a few cars contacted each other on the front straightaway of the 15th lap.
Before the rains came, the track was incredibly fast. During time trials, 14 drivers, including Scott, broke Lernerville's previous Late Model fast lap record of 15.58 seconds, set by Chuck Harper on June 25, 2004.
Lanigan wound up with the new record at 15.072 seconds.
