The PA Lightning eighth-grade girls AAU basketball team won the recent 14-and-under Drill 4 Skill Basketball tournament at LaRoche College. The team went 5-0, defeating the Pittsburgh Fusion 26-11 in the championship final.
Area team members are Rachel Doutt, Ashley Oluschak and Becky Smith of Butler and Jenna Rinker of Slippery Rock.
OAKLAND, Calif. - The woman whose nose was broken last year when she was hit by a chair thrown by Texas reliever Frank Francisco filed a lawsuit against the pitcher, two of his teammates and the Rangers.The suit filed by Jennifer Bueno seeks damages for battery, assault and negligence. Also named in the lawsuit are Texas pitchers Doug Brocail and Carlos Almanzar, the Texas Rangers Baseball Company, and Staff Pro Inc. - the company hired by the Oakland Athletics to provide security at the game.
PHILADELPHIA - A shiny new stadium drew an average of 39,966 fans to the Philadelphia Phillies first 10 games last year.But the thrill of a new stadium goes only so far. After a disappointing season last year, the Phillies are off to a 10-12 start this year, and through 10 homes games this season, average attendance at Citizens Bank Park has sagged to 29,045."The new park drove sales early last year, and while it's still an attraction, we'll need to play winning baseball to drive us to where we were last year," said Richard Deats, the team's vice president of ticket operations.Attendance declined from 399,661 fans in the first 10 games of 2004 to 290,453 in the first 10 this year, a drop of 109,208. Based on an average $26.65 ticket price, that the team cost $2.9 million, and lost parking, concession and souvenir revenues add to the cost.The Phillies are on the hook for $172 million of the $346 million cost of the ball park, and must support a $95 million player payroll.
