Former Slippery Rock University and current Slippery Rock High wrestling coach Fred Powell was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame last Saturday at the Holiday Inn in Green Tree.

Powell joined five other honorees for their sifetime service to wrestling. The inductees will have a plaque with their names on it at the Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla.

Justin Shepherd, a member of the Bloomsburg University cross country and track teams, earned the school's MVP award for those sports.The Seneca Valley grad earned all-PSAC honors in cross country by placing 10th out of 118 runners at the PSAC Championships and was a member of the All-East Regional team by placing eighth out of 185.At the PSAC Indoor Championships, he placed ninth in the 3,000 meters and fourth at 5,000. Outdoors, he has qualified for both the 5,000 and 10,000. He will compete at the Penn Relays in the 10,000 run today.

Sarah Callender pitched a three-hit shutout Wednesday as the Butler County Community College women's softball team defeated Westmoreland Community College, 8-0.Ali Schnur, Valerie Fair, Nikki Cranmer, Laura Hayden and Laine Beckwith all had two hits for the Pioneers, who advance to the Region XX Tournament Friday.
