Major League Baseball In Brief
BOSTON - When Boston pitcher Matt Clement and Baltimore pitcher Rodrigo Lopez met last Thursday in Baltimore, Clement won a 1-0 duel that saw the Red Sox take the victory on a second-inning error.
Tuesday's sequel in Fenway Park couldn't have been more different.
Lopez, who took last Thursday despite allowing just one unearned run, lasted 3
innings Tuesday and gave up eight runs, seven hits and four walks while striking out three. His ERA ballooned from 1.91 to 3.98.
Clement, who scattered eight hits over eight shutout innings last time, gave up 12 hits Tuesday night before leaving in the fifth with two out, two on and two already in.
"Believe me, I wanted him to stay in," Boston manager Terry Francona said about the Butler native. "I was dying for him to stay out there and get five innings. I think if you start managing with your heart more than your head, you get in trouble."
The Orioles' Larry Bigbie doubled off Alan Embree to drive in the two inherited runners and make it 8-7. Clement was charged with seven runs and a walk, striking out one and leaving just one out before he would have qualified for the win.
