Three Slippery Rock University athletes are recipients of the Tug McGraw Foundation's Diamond 45 Scholarship Program, which are rewarded to students who exemplify the former New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies pitcher's "Ya Gotta Believe" philosophy.Dave Stapleton (baseball) and Heather Rulli and Courtney Conron (softball) were among 19 winners who have faced formidable life obstacles.The scholarships were awarded through a competitive application process, which judged applicants on their academic accomplishments, community involvement and leadership abilities.
Cameron Peterson of Grove City won his second straight tournament on the Plantations Junior Golf Tour Sunday, carding a 73-74-147 at Bent Tree Golf Club in Sunbury, Ohio.Peterson won by one stroke over Michael Cress of Dublin, Ohio, and has three victories and three runner-up finishes on the tour this year.
Doug Johnston of Valencia has been named Presidents' Athletic Conference's Men's Tennis Player of the Week.Johnston led Washington & Jefferson College to three victories last week by going 3-0 by winning both at No. 5 singles matches and No. 2 doubles. He won all three of his singles matches in straight sets to run his streak to six straight matches.
Annie Lowry, a freshman on the James Madison University women's soccer team, was named the Dukes' Rookie of the Year.Last fall, the Butler graduate was named to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie Team and the Soccer Buzz Mid-Atlantic Region All-Freshman Team. Lowry finished the campaign with four goals and four assists.
The PA Lightning eighth-grade girls AAU basketball team won the 14-and-under Drill 4 Skill Basketball tournament at LaRoche College last weekend. The team went 5-0, defeating the Pittsburgh Fusion 26-11 in the championship final.Area team members are Rachel Doutt, Ashley Oluschak and Becky Smith of Butler and Jenna Rinker of Slippery Rock.
