Rock settles for split

Chris Tolliver and Todd Schickling each doubled and drove in two runs to lead the Slippery Rock University baseball team to a 6-2 victory over Pitt-Johnstown in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday.

The Rock (23-8) fell 5-0 in the nightcap.

Phil Butch added a pair of hits in the opener for SRU, which tallied four runs in the top of the seventh to break a 2-all tie.

The Rock also turned in a triple play in the bottom of the third inning.

In Game 2, UPJ's Scott Parnell hurled a complete game, limiting SRU to three hits. He struck out seven and walked one.

After a 21-2 start, Slippery Rock has gone 2-6 since.

Grove City College (3-14) snapped an eight-game losing streak Monday by splitting a doubleheader at Pitt-Greensburg, winning 9-5 in the opener before dropping the second game 13-5.

Ryan Jones had a two-run single in the seventh to help the Wolverines pull away. In the nightcap he went 4-for-4 but could not help the Wolverines recover from an early 6-0 deficit.

Knoch graduate Neil Hoagland was charged with the loss.

Seneca Valley graduate Alex Intihar fired an even-par 72 to help Grove City College down St. Vincent 307-317 Monday at Grove City Country Club.Teammates Tyler Fitch added a 73, and Tony Zanotti and Union graduate Dustin Sams each carded an 81.

The Slippery Rock University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to California (Pa.) Tuesday by scores of 14-1 and 6-2.Niki Banner tallied a single and double while Stacey Rhoades added a base hit to account for The Rock's only three hits in the first game as sophomore Courtney Conron shouldered the loss.Brittany Hahn surrendered 11 hits to the Vulcans in the second game. The loss dropped her season record to 12-3.SRU (22-12, 6-6) will host PSAC West-leading Lock Haven Friday.Grove City College split a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader against Westminster Tuesday, winning 1-0 before falling 8-2.In Game One, Sarah Smith allowed five hits and no walks in pitching her second shutout in as many days.In Game Two, Moniteau graduate Jess Flick allowed five runs in two innings and was charged with the loss.Flick and Paula Rice had two hits each in the nightcap with Flick and Abby Moose each scoring a run.
