Whoolery wins 5,000-meter run for SRU
Holly Whoolery's time of 18 minutes, 39.5 seconds was tops in the 5,000 meter run Saturday at the Western Pennsylvania Track and Field Championships held at Carnegie Mellon University.
The effort helped the Slippery Rock University women's team finish eighth out of 14 teams.
Also performing well for The Rock were Katie Bork and Butler High School graduate Jill Rekich.
Bork was fifth in the 5,000 run at 19:29.7 and Rekich took fourth place in the 400 meter hurdles with a finish of 1:08.94.
SRU's mens' squad finished in 12th place, led by Justin Gavazzi's third-place time in the 800 meter run (1:57.1).
Also in track and field action, SRU's Heather Kozuchowsky's season-best effort of 44 feet, 9½ inches in the shot put headlined The Rock's effort at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte's Invitational Saturday. The performance was good for third place.
On the men's side, Tony Carr was third in the javelin throw with a mark of 191-6.
Both the SRU men and women will travel to Clarion University to compete in the PSAC-Western Division Challenge on Saturday.
