WASHINGTON - The same congressional committee that conducted hearings into steroids in baseball has asked NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue Thursday for information about how football regulates the performance-enhancing substances.

The Government Reform Committee also said it will ask for similar data from the NBA, NHL, NCAA, U.S. Track and Field and Major League Soccer.

Tagliabue responded in a letter that he has directed his staff to be fully responsive to the committee's request.

NEW YORK - The New York Jets' plan for a $1.9 billion Manhattan stadium that could also serve as the centerpiece of the 2012 Olympics cleared a major hurdle Thursday when the bid was approved by the state agency that owns the proposed site.The Metropolitan Transportation Authority board unanimously accepted a $720 million offer from the New York Jets to develop the site over a remote railyard on Manhattan's West Side, turning down two competing proposals worth more money.Jets president Jay Cross said he hoped construction could begin in July, noting the NFL recently awarded the city the 2010 Super Bowl on the condition of a new stadium.

AUSTIN, Texas - A former personal assistant to Lance Armstrong filed court papers Thursday alleging that he discovered a banned substance in the cycling champion's apartment early last year.Armstrong's attorney, Timothy Herman, called the allegation false and "absurd."Mike Anderson, who is involved in a legal fight with Armstrong over alleged promises the cyclist made to help Anderson start a bike shop, made the claim about a banned substance in a brief filed in state district court.Armstrong, who is in Europe, has maintained that he is drug-free. The cancer survivor frequently notes he is one of the most drug-tested athletes in the world.
