NEW YORK - The NHL canceled its draft Thursday, the latest casualty of the six-month lockout.
The annual event was scheduled for June 25-26 in Ottawa, but it was scrapped along with the entire 2004-05 season that was called off Feb. 16. The draft can't proceed without a collective bargaining agreement.
Canadian phenom Sidney Crosby - most likely the No. 1 pick - remains in limbo. Once a deal is in place, the NHL will have to determine the selection order.
The 17-year-old forward is currently preparing for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League playoffs.
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah forward Andrei Kirilenko broke his left wrist in a collision with Washington's Kwame Brown Thursday, ending his NBA season.Kirilenko drove to the basket and crashed into Brown early in the first quarter. Kirilenko's feet went out from under him and he put his hands down to break his fall, landing hard on his tailbone and left wrist.
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Former Indiana basketball star Dane Fife became the nation's youngest Division I coach Thursday when he was hired by Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne.Fife, 25, was a catalyst on the Hoosiers' Final Four team that lost to Maryland in the 2002 NCAA championship game.Fife takes over a program that has struggled badly since receiving approval to move up from Division II in 2000.Fife spent the last two seasons on Mike Davis' staff at Indiana.
JAKARTA, Indonesia - Colin Montgomerie, needing a victory to assure himself a spot in the Masters, was five strokes off the lead Thursday after a 3-under 67 in the first round of the Indonesia Open.India's Arjun Atwal and Northern Ireland's Michael Hoey shared the top spot with 62s on a day when play was delayed two hours because of lightning. South Africa's Chris Williams and England's Matthew Cort were at 63.
