Fiesta Bowl payoff is free trip to Pa.

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah handily beat Pittsburgh in the January Fiesta Bowl, now some Ute fan is going to reap the benefits.

Former Gov. Olene Walker had bet Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell on the outcome of the game. Walker on Tuesday announced a contest where a lucky Utah fan will get her prize, a visit to the Keystone State.

"It's a great event, and for you fans to be given a trip to Pennsylvania at Governor Rendell's expense, and the hospitality you will find in Pennsylvania will be remarkable," Walker said during a press conference held in the trophy room of the Utah football office. "You'll cherish every moment of it."

The grand prize winner will get a three-day trip for two to visit either Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, including two tickets to a sporting event and visits to historical sites.

Walker said she decided to give her trip to some "deserving Ute fan," and believes if Rendell had won the bet, he would have also somehow given his prize - a Utah ski trip - to a Pennsylvania resident.

"We wanted to do something for the fans," Walker said. "We think it's more exciting to get the Ute fans involved in this."

Even though the contest was in good fun - Walker, a Mormon, refused to call her contest with Rendell a wager but a "traditional gift exchange event" - she and new Utah coach Kyle Whittingham chided Rendell at Tuesday's news conference for not reading the papers a little more closely.

"A word of warning to the Pennsylvania governor, don't make a wager, uh, what is it, a friendly gift exchange, without knowing the point spread," joked Whittingham. He was the team's defensive coordinator for the last 11 years, but replaced Florida-bound coach Urban Meyer after the Fiesta Bowl, which Utah won 35-7.

Walker said she was so sure of a Utah victory that she didn't even contact the Utah ski industry solicit helping paying off her bet if Utah had lost.

"I said, 'No need, no need,' because I knew Utah was going to win," she said while standing next to the Fiesta Bowl trophy, which she called the "Taj Majal" of trophies.

To claims the prize, Walker encouraged Utah fans to send in postcards with their names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses to the Capitol. Deadline for entries is March 31, with the drawing held sometime in April.

Walker said the Utah tourism industry has kicked in to sweeten the pot for two other lucky fans.

Another postcard will be drawn, with the winner getting a two-night stay at Snowbird Ski Resort. A third postcard will be drawn, with that person getting a two-night stay in Moab.
