SRU leaves Florida with 9-7 victory

The Slippery Rock University baseball team followed up its first defeat of the season on Friday by pulling out a 9-7 win over Merrimack College Saturday at Terry Park in Fort Myers, Fla.

Second baseman Chase Rowe collected four hits while Chris Tolliver drove in three runs for The Rock (9-1).

Nick Armstrong relieved starter John Katich and pitched 5

innings for the win.

SRU is scheduled to host Salem International in the team's home-opener at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Jack Critchfield Park.

Brittany Hahn pitched a complete game, giving up just four hits and striking out four as the Slippery Rock University softball team defeated 5-0 over Barton (N.C.) Saturday in Florence, S.C.Stacey Rhoades collected three hits and two RBIs for The Rock (9-4).

A-C Valley High School graduate Amanda Zychowski scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Slippery Rock University women's water polo team to a split in two games played at the Erie Invitational Saturday.The Rock (5-12) was defeated by Gannon 12-8, before rebounding with a 9-7 win over Mercyhurst.

Slippery Rock University featured seven athletes who finished in the top three in their respective events Saturday at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway, S.C.Kristen Jones took first place in the long jump with a mark of 18 feet, one inch.Calista Shoaff (124-2) and Amber Moore (123-8) finished second and third, respectively in the javelin.Abby McKissick took third in the pole vault (10 feet) and Holly Whoolery was third in the 5,000 meter run (18:31.24).In men's action, Tony Carr managed second in the javelin with a throw of 193 feet and Mike Heiser was third in the 110 hurdles at 15.30 seconds.
