Melissa Brown, Butler County's Junior Miss 2005, will compete for the title of Pennsylvania's Junior Miss 2005 beginning at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Homer Center High School.The daughter of Timothy and Valerie Brown of Saxonburg, she is a senior at Knoch High School.For the talent portion of the competition, Brown will perform a baton twirling routine to "I Go to Rio," from the Broadway musical "The Boy from Oz," the same routine she performed at the Butler County Junior Miss Scholarship Program held in September.
The <b>Butler PM Rotary Club</b> recently celebrated its 85th anniversary with a gathering at The Atrium in Prospect. Current club and Slippery Rock University president Robert Smith presided over the evening's program during which the club received proclamations from Gov. Ed Rendell; the Butler County Commissioners, represented by commissioner James Kennedy; and the city of Butler, represented by Mayor Leonard Pintell.The celebration also marked the 100th anniversary of Rotary International.Resulting from its "A Thousand Points of Caring" campaign, a check for $82,000 was presented to Portersville/Prospect Rotarian Dr. Gordon Fletcher, to be used to rebuild a school in Colombo, Sri Lanka, damaged by the December tsunami.Two donations of $1,000 made to the Rotary foundation were named for local plastic surgeon Dr. Jack Demos, recognized for his nonprofit organization Surgicorps International, and Mark Muzzana, a local runner who recently rescued a disabled woman from her burning house.
Lifesteps Geriatric Adult Day Health Services has announced the winners of its annual quilt show held on Feb. 25.The winners of the People's Choice Awards were <b>Mildred Bertoncello</b> of Slippery Rock for her "Radiant Star" quilt and <b>Grace Younkins</b> of Butler for her "Puppy Dogs and Bones" quilted item.
