Rock wrestler earns regional honor

Charlie Pienaar received the Outstanding Wrestler honor from NCAA Division I East Region head coaches Saturday after leading a group of three Slippery Rock University wrestlers who captured individual championships at the regional tournament at Duquesne University.

Pienaar (29-8), who recently won the PSAC title, won the 184-pound division. Teammates Cory Mancuso (157, 21-14) and Garry Price (165, 14-12) were winners as well.

As champions, The trio earned berths in the national championship March 17 through 20 in St. Louis.

SRU finished in second place behind Duquesne and also had five wrestlers earn third-place finishes: Chris Clarke (125, 8-11), John Marsh (133, 5-8), Tony Monroig (141, 12-17), Chuck Wiltrout (149, 3-5) and Matt Burkholder (Hwt., 9-19).

Stacey Rhoades hit a game-winning two-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to lead The Rock to its first win of the season, a 3-1 victory over Bluefield State Sunday in Savannah, Ga.Brittany Hahn pitched a complete game, scattering four hits and an unearned run. She struck out five.The Rock lost to Georgia Southwestern 11-3 as Carrie Casoni hit a solo home run for SRU.

SRU blanked Holy Family College 9-0 Sunday to improve to 1-4.The No. 1 doubles tandem of Ashley Michaux and Seneca Valley graduate Ashley Greene won 8-0.Both players won in individual play, as did Butler graduate Jen Hutchinson.

Erika Brunner had six goals and six steals, but The Rock lost to Indiana 19-6 and Michigan 15-4 on Saturday.A-C Valley grad Amanda Zychowski scored a goal against Michigan and assisted on three others.

Tim Tray earned first-place honors and was one of three SRU athletes who qualified provisionally for the outdoor NCAA Championships as the SRU squads kicked off their seasons at the Snowbird Invitational Friday and Saturday in Tallahassee, Fla.Tray won the pole vault with a jump of 16 feet,Heather Kozuchowsky placed second with a throw of 44-1¼ and Tony Carr was third in the javelin with a throw of 193-8.Renatta Signorini won the 400 hurdles in 1 minute, 10.47 seconds while Erik Dravenstott and Corey Corbett tied for second in the pole vault (14-11). Kristen Jones (18-7) and Shayne Cooper (56.28) finished third in the long jump and 400 hurdles, respectively.
