Jeer:
The hunter who accidentally shot a seven-months-pregnant woman Nov. 30 while she sat in a car in her driveway near Allentown displayed an unfeeling, unacceptable attitude at his sentencing in connection with the incident.
Instead of the coldness he displayed, he should have felt grateful, counting himself fortunate that he was not being sentenced on more serious charges that could have been filed if the woman had died. Instead, the woman lived and gave birth to a healthy girl.
When the victim of hunter Craig T. Wetzel, 46, asked if he was sorry for what had occurred, Wetzel remained silent. His victim, Casey Burns, 18, began crying and said, "I just think that's really, really mean."
Perhaps Wetzel was feeling more sorry for himself about the $2,700 in fines, six months of probation, five to 10 years of lost hunting privileges and $3,175 in restitution contained in his sentence than the fact that his carelessness could have resulted in two deaths.
His attitude was inappropriate and merited the criticism that others have since directed his way.
