SRU adds five football recruits
SLIPPERY ROCK - Slippery Rock University's football program added five more recruits, most notably defensive back Anthony Walls.
Walls, from Linsly Institute, near Wheeling, W.Va., rushed for 1,900 yards and scored 20 touchdowns for the Cadets last season.
He rushed for 173 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries during a 39-14 win at Moniteau last fall.
Defensively, Walls had nine interceptions his senior year.
"We like him as a defensive back," SRU recruiting coordinator Shawn Lutz said. "He runs a 4.5 40 and brings us speed back there. But he is capable of playing on either side of the football."
Other newly signed players are 6-foot-4, 245-pound offensive lineman Mike Tomaino of McKeesport, 6-3, 285-pound defensive lineman Grant Hrabovsky of Shady Side Academy, 6-4, 225-pound defensive lineman Kevin Guidish of West Mifflin and 6-4, 230-pound tight end Bryan Bent of Richland.
Tomaino was an all-conference player at McKeesport. Guidish, who can also play tight end, was a key figure on a West Mifflin team that reached the WPIAL finals.
"These other four may not make an immediate impact with us, but we found the defensive line help we sought this recruiting season," Lutz said.
The Rock now has signed 12 players to letters of intent. Lutz said it hopes to sign three or four more.
"Offensive linemen is what we're concentrating on now," he said. "Overall, this is a great academic class, too."
Among SRU's original signings were 2,000-yard passer Brad Galvan of Strongsville (Ohio) and 2,000-yard rusher Nate Sipes of Curwensville.
The Rock is coming off consecutive 4-7 seasons.
