SRU's Gibbs sets triple jump record
Slippery Rock University's Preston Gibbs leaped a University of Akron Athletic Field House record 47 feet, 3½ inches Saturday to win the men's triple jump title.
Gibbs' jump was the longest recorded by a PSAC athlete this winter and just one-quarter inch shy of the school record.
Gibbs also placed third in the long jump (22-5¾).
Other top performances included Kristen Jones, who was second in the women's long jump (18-0½); Seth Little (third, men's triple jump, 44-5 ¼); Shayne Cooper (fourth, men's 60-meter hurdles, (8.32 seconds), Tim Tray (fifth, men's pole vault, 14-9); Eric Price (fifth, men's shot put (47-9¾) and Heather Kozuchowski (sixth, women's shot put, 43-3¾).
At the East Region Duals Saturday at home, The Rock defeated Delaware State 25-15, Gardner-Webb 23-12 and Duquesne 28-10 and lost to Millersville 18-15.The Rock's (7-14) lone loss came down to the heavyweight match as Steve Kocevar's 3-2 loss proved to be the difference.Charlie Pienaar, the PSAC champion at 184 pounds, won all four of his matches to improve to 27-7 on the season.Cory Mancuso (157) also won all four matches including a 2-1 triumph in overtime against Duquesne and Garry Price won all three matches he took part while filling in at the 165-pound division.
Abby Moose scored a career-high 27 points and added eight rebounds and five steals, all team highs, in a 70-64 victory over Westminster Saturday.Mary Jane Eaton, a Union High School graduate, had 10 points for Westminster,
Ryan Eller became the 21st 1,000-point scorer in Grove City College men's basketball history despite a 110-102 overtime loss to Westminster Saturday.Eller poured in a career-high 41 points on 17-of-21 shooting from the floor and added seven assists.Phil Bushre added 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting and added 12 rebounds and eight assists.
