BORMIO, Italy - Bode Miller and Daron Rahlves gave American skiing a day like no other. Never before had U.S skiers - men or women - finished 1-2 in any event at an Alpine World Championships.
With Miller first and Rahlves second, they pulled off the feat Saturday, and in the downhill, no less - the sport's signature event.
Miller is the first American man to win the downhill at a worlds; none even had finished second. Rahlves, who made a mistake at the top that might have cost him the gold, took the silver.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - Phil Mickelson won the FBR Open by five strokes.Mickelson struggled with his driver in a 3-under 68, but no one mounted a serious challenge Sunday. He never led by fewer than three strokes over the final 18 holes. Mickelson finished at 17-under 267 on the Tournament Players Club course.Scott McCarron and Kevin Na, at 21 the youngest player on the PGA tour, tied for second at 12 under.
MELBOURNE, Australia - Australia's Craig Parry ended Ernie Els' three-year reign in the Heineken Classic, holing a 12-foot birdie putt on the fourth hole of a playoff Sunday with countryman Nick O'Hern.Parry closed with a 1-under 70 to match O'Hern (71) at 14-under 270.Els shot a 70 to finish at 12 under.
TOKYO - Reigning Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova beat No. 1 Lindsay Davenport 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (5) in the Pan Pacific Open final Sunday and will move up to a career-high third in the WTA Tour rankings.Sharapova will move past Amelie Mauresmo in Monday's new rankings and jump from No. 4 to No. 3, trailing only Davenport and Serena Williams.
Kim Nowakowski scored 18 points and 10 rebounds to help the California (Pa.) women's basketball team defeat Lock Haven 68-57 in a PSAC-West victory Saturday.Nowakowski is a graduate of Butler High School.
Forrest Christmann of Slippery Rock won the 110-pound, 10-year-old division at the Mars Glenn Clark Memorial Wrestling Tournament Saturday.Christmann pinned Tom Donnelly of Mars five seconds into the semi-final match, then followed up with a 4-0 victory over Dominic Politi of Chartiers Valley in the finals.Christmann has won all 11 matches he has wrestled, including nine pins, and has not surrendered a point. He currently wrestles with the Grove City Wrestling Club and will continue his wrestling this spring as a member of the Angry Fish Wrestling Club.
