PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh starting guard Yuri Demetris was suspended indefinitely Sunday for disciplinary reasons.

Coach Jamie Dixon said in a statement that Demetris would not practice while serving the suspension. Dixon did not indicate when or if Demetris would rejoin the No. 20 Panthers (12-2, 2-1 in Big East).

"Discipline and proper behavior must remain the foundation of our program," Dixon said. "Even though he is not formally with the team at this time, we will ensure that he receives the appropriate support from the university and athletic department."

Demetris, a 6-foot-4 senior from Pittsburgh, has started all 14 games and is fifth on the team in minutes played, averaging 3.8 points and 3.4 rebounds. He did not score but had seven rebounds in 21 minutes Saturday in a 67-63 victory over Seton Hall.

Pitt plays at St. John's on Tuesday and at No. 12 Connecticut on Saturday.

HONOLULU - Vijay Singh showed up when it counted Sunday with a routine birdie on the final hole to cap off a 5-under 65 and win the Sony Open.Singh never had the lead at breezy Waialae Country Club until he hammered a 300-yard drive on the par-5 18th, hit a utility club just short of the green and took two putts to avoid a playoff against hard-charging Ernie Els.Singh finished at 11-under 269, and the $864,000 first-place check returned him to the top of the money list. With all the talk of the "Big Three," the 41-year-old Fijian showed he's still the man to beat.Shigeki Maruyama lost a one-shot lead with a bogey on the 12th by missing the fairway, and making a 10-footer to save bogey after going long on the 14th green.He closed with a 71 and tied for third at 271 with Charles Howell III (67).Brett Quigley, trying to win for the first time in 221 starts on the PGA Tour, also bogeyed the 14th and saw any hope end by missing a 4-foot par putt on the 17th. He shot a 71 to tie for fifth with Stewart Cink (65).

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - Former Oakland Raiders center Barret Robbins was shot and critically wounded during a struggle with a police officer investigating a burglary at a South Beach office building.Robbins, a former All-Pro known best for going AWOL during the 2003 Super Bowl and other erratic behavior, was hospitalized in critical condition.Robbins was shot several times in the torso during a "violent struggle" with a Miami Beach detective Saturday night, police spokesman Bobby Hernandez said.Robbins, 31, was confronted in a second-floor office in a building that also houses a nightclub, gym and jewelry store. He was considered a burglary suspect, though no charges had been filed, Hernandez said.

FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU's Sandora Irvin set an NCAA Division I record with 16 blocked shots in the Lady Frogs' 75-34 victory over UAB on Sunday.Irvin, who also had 20 points and 18 rebounds for the first triple-double in school history, broke the record of 15 set by Amy Lundquist of Loyola Marymount in December 1992 against Western Kentucky. LaKisha Phifer holds the overall record with 20 blocked shots for Division II St. Paul's in January 1996.

QUEBEC - The NHL's official puck supplier has laid off half its staff, a result of the hockey lockout that entered its 123rd day on Sunday.InGlasCo, of Sherbrooke, Quebec, laid off 20 of about 40 employees from a plant that normally produces about 300,000 pucks and souvenirs for the 30 NHL teams.

WASHINGTON - Wizards guard Larry Hughes will miss four to six weeks with a broken right thumb, a huge loss for one of the NBA's most surprising teams.Hughes fractured his thumb during Saturday night's victory over the Phoenix Suns.In his seventh season, Hughes is second on the team and 18th in the league in scoring, averaging 21.2 points per game. He leads the league in steals (2.82) and is averaging 6.1 rebounds and 5.3 assists in 34 games.
