Serbia transfer helps Rock men get first win

SLIPPERY ROCK - Glenn Reepmeyer was on the bench with four fouls. Bill Johnson was being denied his 3-point shot.

It appeared Slippery Rock University was going to be denied its first victory - again.

Enter Dejan Jancic.

The 6-foot-11 junior center from Serbia came off the bench to score 12 points and grab six rebounds - both season highs - late in regulation and overtime as The Rock men's basketball team defeated Cheyney, 83-73, Saturday at Morrow Field House.

The win snapped SRU's 11-game losing streak - its worst start in history and longest skid since 1996.

"We were in a spot where we needed Dejan to come in and produce - and he came through," Rock coach John Marhefka said. "He came up huge today.

"Hopefully, this will be the start of something big for him."

Jancic followed up with 16 points Sunday, but SRU dropped an 83-66 decision to Millersville.

Jancic is a transfer from Casper College in Wyoming, where he averaged just 3.6 points and 3.3 rebounds in limited action last year.

He was averaging just 3.8 points and 2.7 rebounds for SRU this season.

"My team needed me," Jancic said. "I couldn't let them down."

Neither team ever had a double-digit lead in regulation. The lead changed hands seven times and the score was tied on seven occasions.

SRU (1-12) had a 67-62 lead with 47 seconds remaining in regulation and Bill Johnson at the foul line. Johnson averages 88 percent from the line and SRU is third in all of NCAA Division II with a team average of 80.1 percent at the line.

But Johnson missed the front end of the one-and-one and Maurice Bryant drained a 3-pointer at the other end to pull Cheyney (1-8) within two.

Following a Rock turnover, Bryant converted a lay-up to send the game into overtime.

"I couldn't believe I missed that foul shot," Johnson said. "We couldn't let another one slip away. Not this time."

The Rock's last three losses were single-digit defeats, including an overtime game at Fairmont State.

This time, SRU took care of business in the extra session.

Jason Bratten nailed a trey 31 seconds into OT to put SRU on top. Jancic took over from there, tipping in a missed shot, laying in a pair of buckets and finishing the deal with a slam dunk, giving The Rock an 81-71 advantage with 18 seconds left.

"We got the lead right away and that was important," Marhefka said. "Our record doesn't show it, but this team has played some pretty good basketball at times."

The Rock is actually 1-1 at home. It has played 10 road games already, but plays nine of its final 15 games at home.

"People look at our record and figure we're not a very good team," Jancic said. "What they don't see is how hard everyone's been working. We're going to win some games."

Johnson scored a career-high 29 points, including six 3-pointers. Reepmeyer added 19 points and six rebounds. Mason Glick had 15 points and eight assists.

"Reep and I are going to get our points," Johnson said. "But defenses are going to key on us. Other guys on the team have to give us production and we got that today.

"Once they (Cheyney) came out and took away my 3-point shot, my teammates were telling me to take the ball to the basket. That opened up a few things."

Asaad Allen - averaging 25.6 points per game - led Cheyney with 20 points. The Wolves dropped their seventh straight game.
