Butler graduate Adria Matonak's recent performances helped the St. John Fisher College women's basketball team remain undefeated for the season.
On Friday, Matonak had 15 points, four assists and three rebounds in an 82-62 win over Nazareth College.
She followed up with a nine-point, five-assist effort to help the Cardinals (9-0, 2-0 in the Empire 8 Conference) dispatch Rochester Institute of Technology 89-45.
The FCA Gems All-Star Cheerleaders captured four first-place awards at the Amer-Cheer Regions Saturday at Highlands High School in Natrona Heights.The Pink Ice squad (2nd grade and under) won the Youth Prep Division, Turquoise (2nd-6th grade) the Small Junior Prep Division, Tanzanite (9th grade and under) the Large Junior Division and Diamond (grades 5-11) the Power Varsity Division.The teams will compete at the CTC Regional Jan. 23 at St. Vincent College.
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - Third baseman Tony Batista will play in Japan next season after hitting 32 homers and knocking in 110 runs with the Montreal Expos last year.The free agent said Sunday the Fukuoka Hawks will pay him $15 million for two years - a $5 million signing bonus in addition to $5 million in each of the next two seasons.Batista said he signed the deal last week in Miami. Fukuoka has not confirmed the deal although it was announced by Batista and his agents. The 31-year-old Dominican said he will travel to Japan at the end of the month.
KAPALUA, Hawaii - Stuart Appleby became the first back-to-back winner in 22 years at the Mercedes Championships, closing with a 6-under 67 and letting Vijay Singh and Ernie Els make all the mistakes Sunday.Appleby almost didn't return to defend his title because of a nerve injury in his left thigh, but he made the trip worthwhile, and it will be even sweeter going home to Australia. His wife is expecting their first child this week.He didn't look like a winner until the back nine on a rainy, windy day at Kapalua.Appleby opened with a 74, becoming the first winner in seven years at Kapalua to have a round over par. And he never birdied the par-4 18th all week, but that didn't matter.Els needed a birdie on the 18th to force a playoff, but his tee shot sailed far to the right, bounced high off the cart path and disappeared into trees and rough for a two-shot penalty.
MOBILE, Ala. - Auburn's Jason Campbell, Georgia's David Greene and Arizona State's Andrew Walter will share quarterback duties for the South team in this month's Senior Bowl.The North quarterbacks are three top NFL prospects: Akron's Charlie Frye, Connecticut's Dan Orlovsky and Purdue's Kyle Orton.Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden will coach the South in the Jan. 29 game at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Norv Turner of the Oakland Raiders will coach the North.
PHOENIX - Terefe Yae and defending champion Shitaye Gemechu gave Ethiopia a sweep of the titles at the P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon on Sunday.Yae, competing in only his third marathon and posting his first victory, outdueled 2004 winner Haron Toroitich of Kenya in a tactical race to take the men's title in 2 hours, 14 minutes, 24 seconds.Gemechu, an alternate on the 2004 Ethiopian Olympic team, earned her fifth victory in 2:32:51.
