Grove City College junior Ellen Magee was named Presidents' Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week.
Magee won the 100-yard backstroke in a meet against Bethany (W.Va.), then won the 50 and 100 freestyle against Hiram (Ohio), along with swimming a leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay.
ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Angels moved aggressively Tuesday to upgrade the back end of their rotation, signing free-agent right-hander Paul Byrd to a one-year, $5 million deal.Although the move gives the Angels five serviceable starters, general manager Bill Stoneman said he is expected to meet today with Barry Axelrod, the agent for free-agent right-hander Matt Clement.Axelrod said Stoneman informed him Tuesday evening that the Angels remain very much in the running for the Butler native with Boston, the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland and Toronto. The Angels likely will present a final offer today.
PITTSBURGH - Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress ran a few pass patterns during practice Tuesday and expects to play Saturday against the New York Giants.Burress estimated he's 95 percent healthy, or better than he was when he had a setback during warmups before the Dec. 5 game at Jacksonville. Burress also sat out Sunday's game against the Jets, when the Steelers were held to three points in three quarters before winning 17-6."I feel great. It's the best I've felt since I've been on the injured list," Burress said. "I haven't felt this good since before I went out of the Cincinnati game (Nov. 21)."
NEW ORLEANS - Dustin Almond threw for 247 yards and a touchdown and ran for another score, leading Southern Mississippi to its first bowl victory in four years, 31-10 over North Texas in the New Orleans Bowl on Tuesday night.Linebacker Michael Boley helped put the game away, returning an interception 62 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Boley, named MVP of the first bowl of the postseason, finished with eight tackles including two sacks.
