Clement, Angels close to deal

The Anaheim Angels web-site is reporting the American League club may be closing in on a contract with Butler native Matt Clement.

Anaheim is preparing to offer Clement a three-year deal worth between $21 million and $27 million.

The story states that Cleveland, Los Angeles, Arizona, St. Louis and Detroit also remain in the running for the 30-year-old right-hander's services.

Clement was 9-13 last season with the Chicago Cubs. He is looking to sign with his fourth major league team, having previously pitched for San Diego and Florida.

In other news:

The Pirates traded reliever Arthur Rhodes to Cleveland Saturday for outfielder Matt Lawton, who hit 20 homers and stole 20 bases for the Indians last year.

Trade talks have broken down with Colorado concerning catcher Charles Johnson and the Pirates have turned their attention elsewhere in looking for a new backstop.
