Butler graduate Kim Nowakowski, a freshman on the California (Pa.) University women's basketball team, was named PSAC West Rookie of the Week.Nowakowski contributed 19 points and 10 rebounds in a pair of road victories. She had eight points and four rebounds in a 59-34 win at Kutztown and 11 points and six boards in an 81-51 win at West Chester.Nowakowski is averaging 9.0 points, 5.9 rebounds per game and is shooting 84 percent (27-of-32) from the foul line.
Butler graduate and East Carolina University freshman swimmer Josh Barthlow placed ninth in the 100-meter backstroke Friday at the U.S. Open meet in San Antonio, Texas.Barthlow finished 18th in the 200-meter backstroke Thursday.
Butler graduate Melanie Buczko, a sophomore on the Bucknell University women's track and field team, broke her own facility and school pole vault record in her squad's first indoor meet of the season.Buczko vaulted 12 feet, 10 inches, snapping her former record of 12-9½ .

Union College (Ohio) football team will host Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas) Saturday in the NCAA Division III national semifinals.Sophomore defensive back Hank Loutzenhiser and freshman linebacker Tony DeRiggi, both graduates of Seneca Valley High School, are members of the team.Loutzenhiser has recorded two unassisted tackles this season.
NEW YORK - Nomar Garciaparra stayed with the Chicago Cubs, Brad Radke remained with Minnesota and the Boston Red Sox made arbitration offers to Pedro Martinez and several other World Series stars Tuesday before the first big deadline of the offseason for teams and free agents.A total of 41 players were offered arbitration by the midnight deadline, including Carlos Beltran and Roger Clemens (Houston), Adrian Beltre (Los Angeles) and Carl Pavano (Florida). They have until Dec. 19 to accept and can re-sign with their former teams through Jan. 8.Garciaparra agreed to an $8 million, one-year contract to remain with the Cubs, the team that acquired him from the Red Sox at the end of July. Radke got an $18 million, two-year deal from the Twins.Boston offered arbitration to Martinez, Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek along with shortstop Orlando Cabrera, pitchers Pedro Astacio and Mike Myers, infielder Pokey Reese and first baseman David McCarty.
