SAN FRANCISCO - New York Yankees slugger Jason Giambi injected himself with human growth hormone in 2003 and also used steroids for at least three seasons, according to his grand jury testimony reviewed by the San Francisco Chronicle.The testimony given in December 2003 to the federal grand jury investigating BALCO contradicts Giambi's public proclamations that he never used performance-enhancing drugs.Giambi described how he injected human growth hormone in his stomach, testosterone into his buttocks, rubbed an undetectable steroid knows as "the cream" on his body and placed drops of another, called "the clear," under his tongue, the Chronicle reported on its Web site.Giambi testified that he obtained several different steroids from Barry Bonds' personal trainer, Greg Anderson, who is one of four men indicted by the grand jury investigating the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative. He said he got the human growth hormone from a gym in Las Vegas.Anderson's attorney, Tony Serra, declined comment to the Chronicle, citing a court order.
NEW YORK - The New York Yankees pulled out of trade talks for Randy Johnson, telling the Diamondbacks that their proposals for deals involving the five-time Cy Young Award winner were unreasonable.The Yankees informed Arizona of their decision in the afternoon, ending weeks of discussions, a high-ranking baseball official told the AP on condition of anonymity.While talks appear dead, they might not be over for good. But for now, the Yankees find Arizona's current asking price too high.
LEBANON, Ill. - McKendree College coach Harry Statham topped Dean Smith.Statham got his 880th career victory, one more than the former North Carolina coach, with his Bearcats' 83-72 win over Maryville. Smith still holds the NCAA record for career victories because all of Statham's wins have come at the NAIA level.
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - Two men were banned from events at The Palace for what the Detroit Pistons say is their involvement in last month's brawl during an NBA game.John Green and Charlie Haddad have been sent letters informing them of the ban, Pistons spokesman Matt Dobek said.Green, of Oakland County's West Bloomfield Township, is accused of lobbing a cup at Indiana Pacers forward Ron Artest on Nov. 19, sparking the brawl. Haddad, of Burt, ran onto the court that night, Dobek said.
WASHINGTON - Washington Wizards coach Eddie Jordan returned to the bench after missing two games with a blood clot in his left leg, and forward Kwame Brown was activated for the first time this season.Jordan, 49, was hospitalized Thanksgiving Day after driving to practice and being examined by team physician Barry Talesnick. Jordan missed the Wizards' loss Friday at Philadelphia and a victory Sunday at Toronto.Brown underwent surgery Aug. 3 to repair a fracture in the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot. He was hurt playing pickup basketball in Georgia and was placed on the injury list Nov. 1.
OXFORD, Miss. - Mississippi coach David Cutcliffe was fired after his first losing season in six years with the Rebels.Cutcliffe was 44-29 in six seasons at Ole Miss, 25-23 in the SEC, and just a season removed from going 10-3 and finishing tied for first in the West with Eli Manning at quarterback. But without Manning, the first pick in the NFL draft, Ole Miss slipped to 4-7, its worst season in 10 years.
PROVO, Utah - BYU coach Gary Crowton stepped down after being asked to resign, ending a four-year stint with the Cougars that began with 12 straight victories and finished with three straight losing seasons.BYU finished 5-6 this season and went 14-21 over the last three, the school's worst three-year run since the early 1960s. Crowton replaced LaVell Edwards, who turned BYU into one of the most successful programs in the country before retiring after 29 years as Cougars coach.
INDIANAPOLIS - Gerry DiNardo was fired as Indiana's football coach after a 3-8 season that ended with a 63-24 loss to Purdue. DiNardo, who had two years left on his contract, had an 8-27 record in three seasons.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Notre Dame football players voted to play in the Insight Bowl with defensive coordinator Kent Baer serving as interim coach. Baer had been the longest serving coach under Tyrone Willingham, who was fired Tuesday. The school said the rest of the coaching staff would remain in place through the bowl game.
MOORESVILLE, N.C. - Tony Eury was promoted from crew chief of Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s No. 8 Chevrolet to director of competition for Dale Earnhardt Inc. Eury, Earnhardt's crew chief since he began racing in NASCAR's Busch series, will be replaced by Pete Rondeau.
