CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Even the Fighting Illini were astonished after their easy victory over top-ranked Wake Forest.

"It was a surprise, but we played great," coach Bruce Weber said.

Fifth-ranked Illinois (5-0) routed the Demon Deacons 91-73 on Wednesday night in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. The Illini were up 54-33 at halftime and led by as many as 32 points in the second half.

"They played infinitely better than we did. I don't know how much more clearly I can say it," Wake Forest coach Skip Prosser said.

Roger Powell Jr. was 8-of-10 from the floor led Illinois with 19 points.

"Some of those shots that go in, I surprise myself sometimes," Powell said.

Dee Brown and Luther Head each scored 16 points, James Augustine added 10, and Deron Williams had eight points and 11 assists.

The Illini had 27 assists on 38 baskets and hit 56 percent of their shots. They stole the ball four times and committed only six turnovers.

Defensively, Illinois controlled Wake Forest's two best players, Chris Paul and Justin Gray, and held the Demon Deacons (5-1) to 39-percent shooting.

At Syracuse, N.Y., Hakim Warrick had 18 points and 11 rebounds in Syracuse's 30th straight victory over New York teams. Gerry McNamara added 17 points for the Orange (6-0). The Bonnies (0-4) have lost 21 in a row on the road.

At Bloomington, Ind. Rashad McCants scored 19 points, and Raymond Felton added 18 for North Carolina (5-1) in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Bracey Wright led Indiana (2-1) with 18 points, and Robert Vaden had 16 points and nine rebounds.

At Spokane, Wash., Adam Morrison scored a career-high 26 points, and Ronny Turiaf had 23 points and 13 rebounds for Gonzaga (4-1) in the Bulldogs' seventh straight over Washington. Nate Robinson led Washington (4-1) with 22 points.

At Evanston, Ill., Elton Brown had 15 points and 12 rebounds to help Virginia (5-0) outlast Northwestern in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Vedran Vukusic had 16 points for Northwestern (1-4).
